Located in the heart of the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, The Nautilus is surrounded by one of the most vibrant and ecologically significant marine environments in the Maldives. This is a place where nature thrives in extraordinary harmony—where manta rays gather seasonally between May and November in the plankton-rich waters of nearby Hanifaru Bay, dancing in slow spirals through the currents.
In honour of World Oceans Day, The Nautilus’s team engaged in a purposeful act of stewardship, caring for the reef that surrounds our island home. Guided by our resident marine biologist, we gently removed marine debris from the lagoon and coral gardens, tending to the delicate ecosystems that thrive just beneath the surface. This hands-on gesture was a quiet act of care, an offering of respect to the living world that moves with us, surrounds us, and endlessly inspires.

A Journey Beneath the Waves
Guests began their afternoon in quiet conversation, as our resident marine biologist shared reflections on the reef’s rhythms and the delicate harmony that sustains life beneath the surface. This thoughtful exchange set the pace for a hands-on coral planting session, where guests carefully affixed coral fragments onto nursery ropes—a small gesture of care, tied to the ocean’s slow, steady renewal. The afternoon flowed into a guided snorkelling safari along our vibrant house reef, where guests drifted through gardens of coral and light, meeting the marine life that moves gracefully through these waters, just beyond our shores.

Why It Matters
The ocean sustains life, not only here in the Maldives, but across the planet. It produces over half the oxygen we breathe and regulates our climate. For those of us who call this island home, caring for the sea is part of daily life—an instinct shaped by respect and reverence.
Our World Oceans Day initiative was one expression of this ongoing care. From coral restoration and reef cleaning to solar energy and collaborations with like-minded partners locally and globally, each choice is made with intention. We work closely with neighbouring islands, support local makers, and create space for nature to thrive, above and below the surface.
