Sustainable Resource Management at The Nautilus Maldives

An aerial of the beach houses at The Nautilus Maldives

Have you ever wondered what it takes to manage resources on a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean? At The Nautilus Maldives, your ultra-luxe bohemian hideaway in the Maldives, we delicately balance the acts of preserving our natural environment and providing the utmost quality service to our guests.

What does it take to be sustainable?

We believe in practising sustainable initiatives to ensure we manage our impact from our carbon footprint and resource use, to how we treat our employees, partners and the local community. The ESG framework is in place to assess our practices and performance on a variety of sustainability and ethical matters.

Environmental factors involve consideration of our impact on natural processes, native biodiversity, air and water quality, waste management, and the potential risks and opportunities we face due to climate change. We would like to proudly share a few of our environmental initiatives aimed at producing a climate-positive impact to secure a liveable future for the next generations.

Green Wall

Our dedicated garden stewards take ownership of our flagship green wall planted with over 20,000 ever-green bushes, clerodendron inerme, or dhun’gethi as known in the local language, Dhivehi. This towering wall provides cooling shade, privacy and a serene green backdrop to every inch of the island landscape.

Not to mention the carbon-positive effect of the reforestation project as an offset for carbon emissions released during construction. At 330 metres long, it spans the circumference of the island’s core, separating guest areas from the team member village. The artificially-made canopy varies from 3 to 6 metres in height, covering an enormous area of 1,700m2. It measures in as the largest green wall in the Indian Ocean.

The Water (re)Cycle

Our great plant wall is kept nourished by either natural rainfall, or during dry spells, by reclaimed ‘grey water’ from the state-of-the-art water treatment plant. By recycling water, we not only reduce our net freshwater consumption but maintain the luscious landscape without depleting our precious resources.

Energy & Water Consumption

Our diligent engineering team tracks and manages energy and water use in all areas of the resort. By knowing what our usual daily consumption is, the team are able to quickly detect if there are any abnormalities in the system and address the issue without delay.

Leaky taps and pipes can waste at least 5,500 litres of water a year – enough to fill a bathtub every day for the whole summer. The expert engineers perform regular spot inspections to ensure our pipelines are water-tight to minimise unnecessary wastage. Although our reverse osmosis (RO) plant can generate up to 300 cubic metres of fresh water each day, our team are mindful of our consumption as the plant requires electricity to produce our valuable water resources.

Compost Champions

Food composting is a beautiful cycle of nutrients from crop production to the return of scraps to the earth. Microorganisms are equipped to biodegrade foods into their raw elements, ready to be absorbed by the roots of the next crop yield.

A key piece of equipment towards self-sufficient living is our commercial composter. We are able to transform 150kg of food waste into ready-to-use compost within a 24-hour period using our ultra-efficient Ecobot. By eliminating food waste sent to landfills, we not only prevent the release of harmful methane emissions from decomposing food but also produce organic fertiliser for our island-grown vegetables.

Feeling Chipper

Our gardens are vibrant, lively, and soul-energising with unique and diverse flora. Amongst the seas of green from the hibiscus or dhiggaa as locally known, pandanus or maakashikeyo, and frangipani or bodu gulchampa trees, our gardeners work at the heart of The Nautilus, clearing debris and collecting coconuts to be used in our delicious Maldivian meals.

Organic waste is deposited into the wood chipper and the mulch is dispersed for nutrient enrichment to keep our gardens rich and healthy. Again, this ensures we reuse, recycle and repurpose as much waste back into useful treasures as possible.

Located inside the phenomenal UNESCO Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve, we believe it is our responsibility to preserve the wonders of our natural world to continue exciting our guests with awestriking wildlife and pristine oceans, while maintaining a healthy environment for our Nautilus family members.
