Among the many things to do in the Baa Atoll is an activity deeply embedded in the heart of the region: fishing. It’s been a way of life and livelihood for Maldivians for centuries and was the primary source of income for years. It is also one of the free-spirited experiences offered at The Nautilus, inviting you to immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the Maldives. Simply enjoy the big blue, a delicious catch and one of the world’s most popular pastimes at our paradise compendium.
Below Shahama Mohamed, our Sales & Marketing Executive, shares her insights on this activity – diving into local insider knowledge, including some of The Nautilus’s signature experiences we offer you.
Local knowledge by Shahama: Fishing-The Islander’s Lifeline
Scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Maldivian waters are renowned for their abundance of aquatic species, including a variety of fishes. Fishing has been our ancestors’ livelihood and part of the islanders’ vibrant culture, and even today, it remains the second-largest economic industry of our archipelagic nation.
The Maldivian tuna is among the most sought-after fish products in the world due to its freshness and the sustainable and traditional fishing methods used. Till today, the most commonly used techniques for fishing in the Maldives are pole and line fishing, handline fishing and longline fishing. All these reduce unwanted bycatch and reflect accountability while respecting the fragile ecosystem. It is an act graciously repaid by Mother Nature, with bountiful harvests and abundance that has continued for generations.
In our island country, tourism and fishing are deeply intertwined; our industry depends on local fishermen for fresh seafood, and to offer you bespoke and leisurely fishing adventures. Maldivians have been praised for their fishing skills and their enthusiasm to host visitors for fishing experiences that are unique to the Maldives alone.
Here at the Nautilus — in a world of your own making — we thrive on creating free-spirited, truly Maldivian experiences. For both adults and children, for amateurs and experts alike, there is a form of fishing for anyone to enjoy all year round.
1. Big-game fishing
For those looking to put up a fight with their catch, big-game fishing is the way to go. Nautilus V, our luxury big-game fishing yacht with all the necessary gear and an enthusiastic crew of expert fishermen, awaits to take you on an adventure out into the deep blue. At the crack of dawn, you’ll set sail for the pelagic zone to look for the ultimate trophy fishes, such as marlins, tunas that weigh over 60 kg, barracudas, mahi mahi and giant trevally that are ready to test your strength.
Ahmed Faiz, one of our boat captains who is a seasoned fisherman, is an expert guide on this excursion. He says: “Big-game fishing in the Maldives is for novices and expert trawlers alike, and we have all the equipment required for it. From heavy-duty trolling to jigging and popping, the Nautilus is prepared to go after some of the world’s most sought-after pelagic fish.”
2. Fishing under the stars or at sundown – on a local fishing boat
This is an opportunity no serious angler visiting the Maldives should miss. Paired with a local fishing crew in a traditional dhoni boat, you’ll head off to the fringes of the Baa Atoll for a carefree and timeless excursion. Sail into the horizon for a breath of fresh air, with a galaxy of stars above you, where your catch of the day includes delicious emperor fish, snappers, squirrelfish and other nocturnal reef fish.
3. Pole and line fishing
Pole and line fishing is the most environmentally friendly way to fish, used by the people of the Maldives for centuries. Mastering this technique requires skill and a well-equipped boat. The people of Baa Atoll have been fishing for their livelihoods this way for many generations.
Why not charter a commercial fishing vessel and try out the pole-and-line method for yourself? You’ll be joined by experienced pole and line fishermen as they demonstrate how to catch tuna with nothing more than a bamboo pole, a barbless hook and a feather used as bait.
Every Maldivian has a deep-seated affinity for the sea, the sand and the sun because of our maritime history and fishing prowess. We can’t wait to show you and your loved ones around the islands and share our culture and fishing techniques here at the Nautilus.
An unforgettable experience to make you fall in love with the Maldives and its people waits to be created just for you. Reach out to us at [email protected] to start planning the fishing trip of a lifetime.
