Held every April 22nd since 1970, Earth Day signals a global call for environmental protection – a day for each of us to get involved with activities supporting the “world’s largest environmental movement”, a movement that today involves more than 1 billion people across the globe.
While investing in our planet is a year-round effort, there is something particularly powerful about marking an international day of observance: It spreads the cause further, recruiting new followers and gaining momentum; it connects people of all nationalities, backgrounds and ethnicities in a common goal; and it gets people talking – from government officials to family members – which leads to action at every level of society and the kind of collective action that can truly effect change. This is why, at The Nautilus Maldives, we love participating in Earth Day; it offers an opportunity to celebrate our outstanding natural heritage within the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – and to recommit to its preservation.

Earth Day 2023: Invest In Our Planet
Take a look at some of the activities we have planned for 22 April, and remember to do your part, wherever you find yourself on this beautiful blue planet.
1. Reef cleaning: 11h00–12h00
We’ll be taking a group snorkelling around our incredible coral reef, collecting floating rubbish while enjoying the underwater marvels.
2. Coral adoption: 17h30–18h30
Our Art of Bohemia hour will be hosted by our resident marine biologist, explaining the wonder and fragility of the coral reef, and what guests can do to participate in its restoration. Coral adoption plays a vital role in reef rehabilitation, and also leaves you with a beautiful living souvenir – your own piece of the Maldives that you can monitor online long after you’ve left our shores.
3. Nautilus Rising Cocktail Hour
The Nautilus’s daily cocktail hour will celebrate all things local by using the freshest produce and flavours on our doorstep, their proximity naturally enabling a low carbon footprint. Our chefs will be preparing gorgeous gourmet canapés using local ingredients, with our mixologists concocting special cocktails similarly inspired. This magical hour will be accompanied by local boduberu musicians welcoming in the evening.
4. Destination dining: Earth Day set menu
Finally, a special set menu for a destination dining experience has been prepared by our award-winning chefs, incorporating local ingredients and inspiration and served in in one of nature’s dreamiest settings by the beach.

Earth Day every day at The Nautilus
At The Nautilus, we believe that Earth Day should be celebrated every day, and our daily operations across the island demonstrate this commitment. Below are some of the sustainable measures we have in place to do our part in preserving and restoring the health of our beautiful blue planet:
1. Plastic-free products
We don’t use plastic straws or soda bottles; and in-room toiletries are unpackaged or provided in unbleached, recycled cardboard or large-size bottles to reduce wastage. Our wood products are certified sustainable and often made from reclaimed wood.
2. Chemical-free commitments
Our cleaning products are ocean-approved and free from toxic chemicals, while our specialised STP plant prevents contaminants from entering the sea.
3. Water-wise measures
To reduce laundering, we don’t replace towels and linen daily, but rather when requested by guests. Additionally, all of our gardens are watered solely by rainwater and grey water.
4. Carbon offsetting
Our vast, 330m dhun’gethi hedge – The Indian Ocean’s largest living wall – naturally offsets CO2 while serving as an attractive privacy screen for guests.
5. Marine conservation
Our AquaNautica team runs dedicated environmental initiatives including rehabilitating the coral reef and monitoring nesting sea turtles.
6. Responsible menus
Our seafood is only sourced from local fishermen who use sustainable, low-impact fishing methods such as pole-and-line fishing, and much of our organic fresh produce is grown right here on the island.
Our exquisite natural scenery attracts thousands of visitors year on year, drawn to one of life’s truest luxuries: the marvel of creation and the incredible environment encountered at every corner. It’s our duty – and privilege – to help conserve this natural heritage so that it continues to bless visitors for many generations to come.
